There is a danger more subtle than tyranny. More corrosive than open corruption.More destabilizing than war. It is the slow replacement of Foundation with Flexibility. The quiet trade of Natural Law for Narrative.

It is what we call:

Oscillating Pragmatism.

The Surface: Declared Standards

Every civilization erects its visible pillars:

• Truth

• Justice

• Equality before the Law

• Rights grounded in Nature

These are proclaimed as immutable. They are taught as stable. They are defended as sacred.

They are said to eliminate chaos, disorder, and disharmony between individuals and groups.

This is the public architecture. But beneath it lies something else.

The Hidden Movement Beneath the Structure

When Natural Law aligns with political objectives, it is praised. When it obstructs those objectives, something shifts. The language changes. The standard bends. The justification appears. This is not open rebellion against principle. It is more refined than that. It is oscillation.

An elite movement between:

• Declared Pragmatism (objective standards)

• Mythological Pragmatism (narrative justification)

• Political Expediency (desired outcome)

Back and forth.Back and forth. Back and forth. Until the foundation is no longer foundation —but sand.

The Appearance of Reality

The most effective deception is not the obvious lie. It is the appearance of reality for reality itself. Pragmatism is invoked in the name of honor:

“For stability.”“For national security.”“For the greater good.”“For protection of democracy.”

It sounds reasonable. Measured. Responsible. But when adherence to the publicly declared standard would prevent the desired outcome, the appeal shifts into mythos: Emergency. Exceptionalism. Fear. Destiny. Historical necessity. The standard is not abolished. It is bypassed. And because the language still sounds virtuous, the bypass goes unnoticed.

The Doctrine of the Pious Fraud

A “pious fraud” is a lie told for a perceived higher good. A deception sanctified by outcome.

Under this doctrine:

Truth becomes negotiable. Morality becomes conditional. Law becomes elastic. What would normally violate Natural Law is permitted —because the goal is considered righteous. In times of “need,” deviation is justified. But who defines the need? And who defines the righteousness? This is where mythos becomes instrument. Not symbol. Not story. Instrument.

Mythological Pragmatism

There is pragmatism grounded in Natural Law —aligned with objective cause and effect. And then there is mythological pragmatism —where narrative is weaponized to override principle. The oscillation looks like this:

1. Establish Natural Law publicly.

2. Affirm equality of standards.

3. Encounter obstruction.

4. Invoke mythological justification.

5. Achieve political expediency.

6. Return to the language of principle.

The public hears consistency. But the structure has shifted. Each oscillation erodes the invisible mortar of trust.

Foundational Quicksand

Natural Law requires coherence. It requires that standards apply equally —not situationally. When those in authority oscillate between declared morality and undeclared mythos, they create:

• Moral disorientation

• Institutional distrust

• Fragmented perception of justice

The people may not articulate it. But they feel it. And when moral gravity weakens, force must increase to compensate. That is the ancient pattern.

The Greater Danger

A society can survive mistakes. It can survive disagreement. It can even survive corruption.

But it cannot indefinitely survive selective reality. If truth binds only when convenient,then justice binds only when uncontested. If pragmatism is publicly declared but privately suspended,then the real foundation is not Natural Law. It is expediency.

And expediency is not a foundation. It is weather.

The Question Beneath the Question

If “pious frauds” are acceptable in times of need…Who decides when the need exists? If mythos can override principle…What remains of principle? If standards are universal —why are they selectively applied? Foundational quicksand does not announce collapse. It waits. It feels solid —until weight is applied.
